At a recent event, I met three gentlemen, all in their eighties. I like to engage this generation to learn and gain insight whenever I get the chance. As we talked, they told me that each had been married to their wives for well over 50 years.

The restaurant was busy at lunch time and was understaffed. She worked hard and kept smiling, thanking customers for their patience.

Leaders come in all shapes and sizes. It doesn’t take long to identify the ones who are pursuing their own selfish agendas and those who truly care about others. Brian Cook is a leader who cares. He doesn’t just say he cares, he shows it.

Let’s get real. We tend to use the excuse “I’m so busy” or “I just don’t have the time” when thinking about all of the demands on our lives. However, I believe that we choose to invest in the things that are the most important to us.

“Don’t mistake brilliance for direction and purpose.” The leader who said this to me is one of the most brilliant people I have ever met. His name is Kevin Kuck and he is changing his direction and purpose.

Usually, as a person climbs the ladder of success they become less humble. Usually, but not always. Sunny Kaila grew up on a farm in rural India. He came to the US as a teenager who was determined to work hard and take care of others. His journey took him through tough times yet he persevered.

I wonder how many things we are missing because we do not stop and listen to those around us? In this age of fear and fighting and name calling and lack of trust for those who are not “on our team”, I wonder if we can hear anything at all.

This occurs when the second dog stops what he/she is doing and goes to support or back up a dog that is on point.

Respect. The absence of it destroys relationships, undermines partnerships and divides nations. When it is present, there is a path forward through any difficult situation.

I challenge you to lead with an “others first” attitude. Choose to lead like Ruthie and you will make a difference!
