Get Real

Let’s get real. We tend to use the excuse “I’m so busy” or “I just don’t have the time” when thinking about all of the demands on our lives. However, I believe that we choose to invest in the things that are the most important to us. When a leader takes the time to understand the personalities of his/her team members, communication and productivity significantly increase. Likewise, when we take the time to learn more about those who are in our personal life, our relationships become much more healthy and meaningful.

Someone said that we become experts in the things we love. If you truly value people, you will spend time creating positive relationships with them. This applies to your team, your friendships and your home. The problem is that choosing this route is not easy. It takes work, sacrifice and intentionality to become an expert in our relationships. Relationships do not just happen. They are developed and continue to evolve through the course of our lives. Without purposeful focus they will stagnate and die.

The reality is that we make time for the things that are important to us. What priority do you place on your professional, and more importantly, your personal relationships? Are you willing to learn about those you lead? Are you willing to give your time, energy and effort to grow the trust and commitment it takes to develop a meaningful bond with those who matter in your life?

These are hard questions, but the answers will reveal important truths about your priorities. Choose to invest in the ones you love, live with and lead. Trust me, it will make a difference.
