Stand In The Gap

2021 brings with it a hope of better days and new beginnings.

However, there are many difficulties that are staring us in the face as we venture into this year. I was talking with a friend and seasoned leader about a colleague who is struggling at this moment with COVID-19. She reminded me that one of our most important responsibilities as leaders is to “stand in the gap” for those we lead and love.

Standing in the gap means being present (even if it is virtually) when someone is in need. It means putting others before yourself. It requires humble strength to think about and act to meet the needs of others. It is having the courage to stand up and represent those who are not able to do so. It is possessing the wisdom to respond with common sense instead of reacting solely out of emotion. It is serving. It is protecting those who need it. It is voicing a prayer for others who are in distress.

Simply put, it is caring enough to step up and give to others through their difficult days. I will stand in the gap for my friend today.

You do not have to look far to see those who are in need. The question is how will you respond? When you choose to stand in the gap for others, you will make a difference.

My dear friend and colleague Jerry Witten, passed away from COVID-19 after I wrote this LLM. His legacy of love and serving people will continue to inspire us to stand in the gap for those we lead.
