Weak Enough
I recently got to spend time with Rick Burgess, the cohost of the “Rick and Bubba Show”. The show began in 1994, and has grown into a nationally syndicated radio show that airs to 1.2 million people weekly. Rick has coauthored multiple New York Times bestselling books and has appeared on various national radio and television shows. While that is quite an impressive resume, these accolades do not define Rick Burgess. You see, Rick is a man who has experienced the greatest loss and felt the ultimate pain:
“After my youngest son went to Heaven, I was trying to get ready to go back to work, and I could not tie my shoes I was so weak. I questioned the Lord, 'How can you expect me to go back on the air and do this show when I can’t even tie my shoes?' The Lord replied in my spirit, 'Now you are ready. Your problem was never that you weren’t strong enough- your problem was that you weren’t weak enough, but now you’re ready. Now I can use you like I never could before.'” – Rick Burgess
When we experience loss and trauma, it’s easy to allow that experience to define us and destroy us. Instead of being destroyed, Rick was defined and refined by the horrific loss of his youngest son. He could have crumbled, he could have given up and stepped away from public life altogether. Instead he chose to be weak, and let the strength of his faith carry him when his own strength could not. He chose to lean into his pain and to trust in a strength that was not of himself or his own making. Because he chose to be vulnerable, Rick’s influence grew, and today he is continuing to honor the legacy of his son by making a difference in the lives of thousands and thousands of others across the country.
Leadership begins and ends with choice. I learned a lot from my time with this authentic leader who chose to be weak enough. Listen to this Crossing The Line podcast where Rick shares his powerful and inspiring story. I truly believe it will make a difference!
