Fear is Contagious

Fear is contagious. It spreads anxiety and confusion across a culture, a community, a business or a relationship. Sometimes fear is justified, and other times it is irrational and unfounded. Misinformation can lead to unfounded fear, and there are leaders who seek to use that fear to manipulate and control.

We're seeing a great amount of fear in our society and across the world today. People are struggling to find truth. There are those who are leveraging this fear to propagate their own political agenda: “If you do this, then you are on this side. If you don’t, then you must be on the other side.” This is the messaging that permeates through social media, news media… it seems to be almost everywhere. The result is division, mistrust, and hurt.

What we need is leadership- not from someone else, but from our own selves. We need do the hard work of getting the best information available. We need to thoughtfully make decisions that are not driven by media hype and political demands. We need to search our souls for the motivation behind our choices. We need to consider all options and how each will affect those we love.

Let’s stop the finger-pointing, blaming and shaming. Let’s stop allowing fear to drive our behavior. Let’s be personally responsible for making wise choices for ourselves and leading ourselves well, because when we do we will make a difference in the lives of others.
