The Encounter
I entered the coffee shop and saw him sitting alone in a booth. He was homeless. Trying to stay warm, he was slowly eating a meager meal with his coffee. I initiated a short conversation with him and asked how he was doing. He seemed a bit confused, wondering I’m sure, why I was talking with him. I assured him that I just wanted to check on him and then I handed him a monetary gift. He thanked me and then he said, “I bet you would not have given this to me if I had asked for it”.
I have pondered that statement over and over since my encounter. Would I have given anything to him? How do I respond when I am approached by those who are asking for help? What about those who are different from me? What about those whom I do not understand? Am I guilty of judging others and making assumptions?
As we celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr., it is fitting that we keep the fight against racism and prejudice of any nature at the forefront of our thoughts and behavior. I am committed to growing my awareness and making changes where needed.
We can do better. Working together we can make a difference.
