Just Stop

"I’m just tired," “I seem to be more exhausted than ever before," “It seems like this is never going to end.” These are the things I consistently hear from leaders these days. With the pandemic, political positioning, civil unrest and the uncertain economy all raging at full force, many are struggling to find the strength to lead. Not to mention, dealing with the family issues we all must navigate on a daily basis. A young, brilliant leader shared with me how she is handling this chaotic time.

She said, “I have learned that I have to give myself permission to not be ok.” The problem for most of us is not that we want to wallow in our stress but that we don’t acknowledge the need to take a step back and renew our souls from time to time. This 30-something year old leader explained to me that once she took the time to intentionally experience and address the stress, she could continue to lead with renewed strength.

Exhaustion, burn out and extreme stress threaten our ability to lead our teams including our most important team – our family and friends. Allow yourself to stop. Take a walk, take a nap, read a good book (non-work related), sit in your tiredness and rest.

This wise leader has it right. When we choose to give ourselves permission to not be okay for a while, we become much more equipped to make a difference.
