The Toilet Plunger

Recently, we had some work done on our pool. I wasn’t sure how the crew would fix the liner that needed to be stretched. I assumed they’d bring some kind of new technology or high-powered machine.

I was dead wrong.

The young man who showed up had just one tool in his hand: a red toilet plunger. With a determined look, he stepped into the water and began plunging at the wrinkle in the liner. Not once. Not twice. But over a hundred times. Slowly, with each motion, the liner began to shift into place.

It wasn’t quick. It wasn’t flashy. But it worked.

Maybe you’re struggling with a relationship, and nothing seems to be working. I want to encourage you to keep showing up. Keep investing the energy and the effort into your important relationships. Success may not come quickly or easily. Most likely, you won’t start seeing the results of a healthier relationship after your first few “plunges”. Often, it’s not until the hundredth small act of care, communication, or humility that real change starts to happen. We must keep plunging.

When we are consistent with making the little shifts in our relationships, we will make a difference.
