The Connection We Need
Some of the richest conversations and deepest connections I've had over the years have been with people who were decades older or younger than I am.
When I was younger, I assumed wisdom belonged primarily to those with more years behind them. As I've grown older, I've discovered something equally important: every generation has something to teach and something to learn.
Unfortunately, we live in a time when generations are often encouraged to stay in their own lanes. We label one another instead of learning from one another. We criticize our differences instead of becoming curious about them. Yet some of the strongest organizations, healthiest families, and happiest individuals I know all have one thing in common—they intentionally build relationships across generations.
Success is rarely determined by what we know alone. It is also determined by who we are willing to know.
If we want to connect with people across generations, here are three attitudes we must embrace:
First, choose an attitude of respect. Every generation has been shaped by different experiences, challenges, and opportunities. Respect doesn't require agreement. It simply recognizes that every person has value and every life has a story worth hearing.
Second, choose an attitude of humility. None of us has all the answers. Every generation has blind spots. Humility reminds us that learning never stops and that wisdom often comes from the people we least expect.
Third, choose an attitude of curiosity. Ask questions. Listen to understand instead of listening to respond. Be genuinely interested in what has shaped another person's perspective. Curiosity builds bridges where assumptions build walls.
Whether you're leading a team, raising a family, or simply making a new friend, remember this: meaningful relationships don't happen by accident. They happen when we intentionally value people whose experiences are different from our own.
When we choose to shift from thinking we have all the answers to embracing an attitude of respect, humility, and curiosity, we will make a difference.
