The Authentic Judge
It was a first for me. I was serving on the jury panel for a criminal case. As the case proceeded, I found myself incredibly impressed with the judge. It wasn’t his intellect, knowledge of the court system or experience that struck me. While he certainly was competent in all of those areas, he possessed a trait that made him even more effective. Humility. We experienced his authentic humbleness by how he addressed the jury as well as the rest of those in the courtroom.
This judge took the time to make sure we understood each phase of the trial. He was sensitive to our lack of legal knowledge and did not try to impress us by using legal jargon. Instead, he took the time to explain the law, the process and our responsibilities. He did this while constantly showing gratitude to us for giving of our time to do our civic duty. He also had the entire courtroom (including himself) to stand each time we entered or left the courtroom. He said that was to honor us and our commitment to serving our community.
I left that experience with a refreshed appreciation to those who serve us every day in our court system. I was also reminded of the power of a humble leader. Thank you, Judge Brown for leading not only from the power of your robe but from your authentic care for people.
When we choose to lead with humility, we will make a difference.
