It’s Not The Business

We are living in a time where the words “attrition,” “retention,” “recruiting" and “hiring” are dominating the conversations in the business world. I recently talked with an executive (let’s call him John, because that’s his name) who may have discovered a way to address these issues and it has nothing to do with business. It has everything to do with investing. I’m not talking about financial investments or portfolios. This wise and seasoned leader shared with me that his leadership team is struggling like everyone else with the ever-changing way companies must operate to be successful. But his team has changed the meaning of success.

The team shared with John that they are at the company not because of the money, or upward opportunities. Instead, they are there because of the investment that John has made in their lives personally. This has led them to invest in each other. It is the chemistry and the loyalty that has been developed through the years that is allowing this team to function at a high level.

Obviously, there are other variables like competitive wages that affect the challenging business culture we are experiencing. But, I think many times, we overlook the importance of relationships. While it is not a miracle cure, investing in those around us yields long term results that give leaders an edge in today’s marketplace.

Besides that, investing in relationships is what true leadership is all about. Professionally or personally, it may be time to start investing in those who matter to us. Just ask John; when you authentically care about the lives of others you will make a difference.
