Count On It

There’s one thing we can all count on experiencing in life: change.

It happens to everyone, regardless of who you are, where you live, or how much wealth you possess. It affects 100% of those who are living. The question isn’t if things will change…it’s how you will handle it.

My parents are 85 years old and have lived through extraordinary changes—some joyful, others deeply challenging. Now, they’re facing another major transition: moving from their home to an assisted living community. It’s a huge change, with some welcome benefits, but also a significant and challenging adjustment. I deeply admire the way they’ve faced this moment—with honesty, grace, and courage.

I was talking with Pops about this situation and wondering if they would be happy in their new home. He said something that really stuck with me:

“Learning to accept change with a positive attitude is directly related to a person’s overall happiness in life.”

What wisdom from a man who has lived through so many changes in his life. And I’ve seen him live it out for years. Ask Pops about his life, and he won’t list the hardships (although there have been plenty)—he’ll tell you how blessed he’s been and continues to be.

Facing change can be incredibly difficult. There are certainly times when we hurt, when we need to grieve and feel our pain. But as I continue on my life’s journey, I want to choose a mindset of hope. I want to age with optimism.

We all get to decide each day how we will face what’s ahead. I want to face the changes in my life’s journey with a positive attitude, and I invite you to do the same — I know it makes a difference.
