The Change We Didn’t Choose

None of us chose it. None of us wanted it. But in the last couple of years, this mess we call The Pandemic has changed the way we do life. The truth is, change has always been a part of our lives. No one stays the same as we experience the trials and challenges of life. No one is exempt from having to deal with loss, pain, or frustration related to change.

Many choose to allow the change in their lives to drive anxiety and fear of the unknown. Then there are those who deal with change in a different way. They are curious and driven to learn from new ways and new struggles. They embrace hard and use it to strengthen their resolve. I have witnessed families who invest in special needs family members, not knowing what the next day or even the next hour might hold. Yet they love unconditionally and refuse to allow uncertainty to define their home.

I have watched as those I care about work to overcome — no, to live with — incredible grief and hurt from losing someone who was a vital part of their life. Yet they face this unwanted change with courage, resolve and strength.

There are millions of ways that each of us experience unexpected and unwanted change in our lives. We will never be able to change or control this truth. However, we can choose to face our fears, embrace the new and walk into each day knowing who we are and what we value.

We cannot control change, but we can choose how we respond to it. When we embrace the change that we didn’t choose, we truly make a difference.
