Before They Begin…
I know it’s weird to be talking about the holidays in September. But the holidays have a way of putting our relationships under a magnifying glass. So, before the schedules get busier, the gatherings begin, and the expectations increase, this may be a good time to conduct a relationship audit.
Think about the people who matter most in your life and ask yourself: How are we really doing? Is there a conversation we need to have?
Start by taking inventory of a few important areas.
1. Communication: Have most of your conversations become about schedules, responsibilities, and what needs to get done?
2. Unspoken expectations: Are you frustrated because someone isn’t meeting expectations you’ve never actually expressed?
3. Appreciation: Has criticism begun to outweigh encouragement? Are you taking someone for granted?
4. Investment and forgiveness: Are you waiting for the other person to make the first move?
Healthy relationships require intentional maintenance. Sometimes that means asking a meaningful question and really listening to the answer. Sometimes it means expressing an expectation instead of assuming someone should already know it. It may mean saying, “I appreciate you,” offering forgiveness, or having the courage to initiate a conversation you’ve been avoiding.
Strong relationships aren’t built by avoiding difficult conversations. They’re built by having those conversations with honesty, grace, and genuine care.
In this week’s Relationshifts podcast, we talk about conducting a relationship audit before the busyness of the holidays takes over. Maybe the shift we need is surprisingly simple: stop checking boxes and start checking in. Pause long enough to ask questions, listen, clarify needs, and recognize what someone else may be carrying.
