A Little On The Handle
He really didn’t have to do it. It was not his job or his responsibility. However, this leader saw a need and chose to tackle it. He rolled up his sleeves and led an effort to upgrade the landscaping where he works. His name is Matt, and to be clear, yard work is not found anywhere in his job description as a senior leader in this organization.
My dad taught me to always “give a little on the handle” when doing a job. In others words, go beyond what is expected. That is exactly what Matt did. It is no surprise that he performs his “real” job with consistent excellence. He demonstrates what true servant leadership looks like.
It seems many times we use the lowest bar to set expectations for ourselves. What if we chose to raise the bar and offer our best to others? What if we applied this principle to our relationships? What would going beyond expectations, with those we love and care for, look like? What if we consistently brought our A game to our work space instead of our B or C game? I suspect there would be no worker shortage, no lack of quality products, and less of the poor work ethic that is found in our culture.
Choose to be like Matt and bring your best to your work and to your personal relationships and you will make a difference!
