A Bump In Life’s Journey

Two of my high school friends, Mike and Kim, were killed recently in a boating accident. It was a tragic loss, and they were taken from this earth far too soon.

While visiting with Mike’s father, who is 86 years old, he said something that stopped me in my tracks:

“Life is full of good times and good memories, but this is a big bump in the road. Still, I know that God will carry me through this, just like He has through all the other bumps in this journey.”

I marveled at the strength and wisdom of this senior adult. It was clear that he was hurting, with tears of grief on his face… but even in his pain, he made the choice to lean on his faith and let the strength of God carry him. He chose to remember that life is made up of both the good times and the bad.

Finding strength during our most difficult days comes when we make a choice to acknowledge our suffering without letting it define our outlook. Life holds both tragedy and triumph; how we choose to face each one defines our character and builds our perseverance.

Like Mike’s dad, those who recognize that they can’t navigate life’s bumps alone will find the strength to make a difference.
