When Generations Collide

RelationShifts: When Generations Collide
Larry Little and Melissa Jackson

When generations collide, it’s easy to believe the problem is the disagreement itself.

But many times, we are not reacting to what is actually happening; we are reacting to what we think it means.

A different opinion can feel like disrespect.
A different approach can feel like rebellion.
A different communication style can feel like someone doesn’t care.

But what if it’s not rejection? What if it’s simply… perspective?

The goal is not to agree on every issue. The goal is to create room for differences and learn how to live with them well. Healthy relationships are not built because everyone sees life the same way. They are built when we choose respect, curiosity, and understanding, even when we disagree.

That’s why healthy conflict needs a recipe:

  • Respect: Be curious before you criticize.

  • Listening: Seek to understand the intent, not just the words.

  • Intentionality: Commit to searching for a solution, not just winning the argument.

In this week’s episode of the RelationShifts podcast, we talk about what happens when generations collide and how conflict often grows more from misinterpretation than actual disagreement.

When we shift from thinking, “Their way is wrong,” to “Their way makes sense from their perspective,” it will make a difference.
