When You Find Yourself Locked In
We recently had a “you can’t make this up” morning. We woke up to find that we were locked inside our own condo because of a stubborn door bolt that was jammed and refused to budge. I tried all of the easy and quick fix ideas I had, only to realize that there was no easy way out. At this point it became obvious that we needed to make a few shifts.
Our first shift came quickly. Realizing that our pup needed to go outside, we started looking for options. We discovered that we could pass our pup through the air filter opening into the utility space so a neighbor could help. Not a perfect fix, but it worked. Sometimes the answer isn’t obvious, and it’s certainly not comfortable, but thinking outside the box (or air filter, in this case) allowed our pup to get some much needed relief.
The second shift was important. Instead of going with my first thought of forcing the issue and damaging the door, we chose to call a professional lock smith. It’s vital to realize when you’re stuck and when you need help.
The third shift occurred when we experienced the kindness around us. It allowed us to swap frustration for thankfulness. A neighbor stepped in without hesitation, and the locksmith showed up with both skill and a great attitude. It was a reminder that kindness is still alive and well and often shows up right when you need it most.
When you choose to shift from allowing the problem to define us to becoming problem solvers it will make a difference.
