Have you ever had a plan that seemed perfect, only to watch it unravel right before your eyes? I certainly have! I like having a plan. I like knowing where I'm going, what I'm doing, and how I'm going to get there. But life has a way of reminding us that even our best-laid plans don't always work out. The truth is, life isn't nearly as much about how well we plan as it is about how we respond when things don't go according to plan.
I've learned that navigating life's unexpected twists and turns requires a few important shifts:
First, learn to live "loose-fisted." When we hold too tightly to our possessions, preferences, schedules, or expectations, we leave little room for generosity or flexibility. Living loose-fisted means recognizing that life isn't just about what we can hold on to, but also what we're willing to give away. It means choosing generosity over selfishness and people over possessions.
Second, plan for your plans to be interrupted. There's nothing wrong with having a plan, but problems arise when our plans become so rigid that we can't adjust when life takes an unexpected turn. Give yourself options. Sometimes what feels like a detour may actually lead us to something better than we originally imagined.
Third, keep your eye on what really matters. When plans fall apart, it's easy to become so consumed with fixing the problem that we overlook the people standing right beside us. Relationships are far more important than schedules, accomplishments, or getting our way. Protect the relationships that matter most. Invest your time, attention, and energy in the people you love. Years from now, we may not remember everything that went wrong with our plans, but we will remember the people who walked through those moments with us.
So, make your plans. Dream big. Look ahead. But remember, a meaningful life isn't measured by how much we control, but by how well we respond to what we cannot control.
When we choose to shift from always being in control to being in the moment, we will make a difference.
