This Year… Make It Personal

Some friends of ours recently made a quiet, but life-changing decision. They chose to invest in a life. The young teenage girl from another country has no home, no family, and a need for someone to love her. This family took an incredible risk to welcome her into their home for a month so that they could become her advocate. They overcame a language barrier, cultural differences, her health issues, and other obstacles to care for this child. The story continues to unfold, but one thing has already been written: the young girl’s life will forever be changed because of the love she has experienced in their home.

This is the time of year we are tempted to make self-improvement goals that sound good but rarely stick. What if this year we made it personal, instead? What if the measure of a meaningful year wasn’t what we accomplished, but who we stood beside? Advocacy doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes, advocacy is a steady presence, a voice of encouragement, or a willingness to notice someone who feels overlooked.

As you step into this new year, consider this simple shift: instead of setting another goal, choose a person. Who can you invest in? Who needs your time, your care, your attention, your belief? When we shift from chasing outcomes to loving people, we make a difference that lasts a lifetime.
