They Matter

This is the day that love is celebrated, or at least they tell us that it should be.  The media coverage presents a fairytale type of love that is rarely attainable and certainly not sustainable. I suggest we take a step back and use this season to authentically communicate care and concern for those around us. A wise leader once told me “to be unclear is to be unkind”.

What if we demonstrate kindness by clearly communicating on a regular basis? This is not easy, and it takes work. If you care for those you work with, why wouldn’t you tell them? Do your team members know that each one is valued and appreciated? It may seem awkward to have an appreciation conversation, but you may be surprised at what it will mean to your professional relationships.

Much more important are the people that you care about on a personal level. When was the last time you shared words of authentic care to your loved ones? When did you perform a random act of kindness just to communicate that the person is loved by you?

It is much easier to not show our care and concern for others. “They don’t show me care” or “they already know” or “I’m not good with words” are some of the more common excuses. The truth is that excuses keep us from clearly communicating our appreciation. The result is that those who are important to us may never realize it.

On this Valentine’s Day, make the choice to show kindness by clearly demonstrating your care and concern for those who matter to you.
