Greetings
The more I read headlines, the more depressed I become. It doesn’t take long for me to totally focus on the incessant negativity that fills our news and media. Recently, I walked to a local restaurant for lunch. I was greeted by hard working employees who were committed to providing excellent service. I saw other customers who offered a smile and a warm hello. I left the establishment and was greeted by a smile and a hello from another person. I continued my journey back to our office and I saw yet another hard-working person with a smile on his face who nodded to me.
You can say that those greetings don’t amount to much, but I would disagree. I believe that in the midst of the bombardment of negative reporting and scare tactics in our world today, there is something greater. That something is stronger, and it holds the fabric of our society together. It crosses all generations, ethnicities and political affiliations. It is evident to us all when we allow ourselves to see it, experience it and share it.
I am referring to kindness. It is the kindness found in those around us every day that holds us together. It is the door being held, the smile, the nod, the letting someone go before you, that reminds us of who we are as people. We can never let the façade of negativity dumped on us every day define us. I realize there are many negative things in our world today. I also know that the kindness I show to others sculpts the very character of who I am and who I will be.
Choose to show kindness to those around you today and look for the kindness in others. It may be a simple greeting, but it makes a difference!
