Broken Seashells

We are taking a break from March MADness this week to celebrate something more important, at least to me.

We were walking at my favorite place in the world, the beach. Specifically, the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Lately, the shorelines are filled with seashells. They arrive in all shapes, sizes, and colors. As we were walking, my wife, Melanie, said, “They all have one thing in common… they are broken”. She paused and then continued, “Just like all of us. We all are broken in our own way, and we all need help from someone greater than ourselves.”

I realize that people look to many different places for help when they’re dealing with brokenness in their lives. While I in no way want to disrespect those with other views, please allow me to share where my hope comes from. I follow a leader who lived, died, and lives again. His name is Jesus, and he is, in my opinion, the greatest leader and giver of hope who has ever lived. I have experienced his healing abilities through my own brokenness, and his message of unconditional love gives me the hope that drives my decisions daily.

Mel was right. We are all broken. Our lives are filled with heartaches, our relationships struggle, and we find ourselves searching for help, for someone to walk with us, heal us, and love us despite our brokenness. We need someone stronger than ourselves. For me, that person—that hope—is Jesus.

That is why, as a broken person, I can celebrate. And that is why for me, Jesus truly makes the difference.
